This 99 word piece was written for the Carrot Ranch challenge “What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you are in absolute danger?“ Not sure what would be the the first thing in my mind in that situation but I know what was in Mum’s.
My Mum was a stickler for cleanliness. One day she said to me, ‘Goodness, there’s enough dirt in your ears to grow potatoes.’ So she did. I missed a lot that the teacher said because of those King Edwards in my earholes.
She would always ask if I had clean underpants on. She said she’d die of embarrassment if I got run over by a car and the doctors saw that I had skidmarks on my undies. Forget any inconsolable grief. She wanted to be able to hold her head high when she went to pick up my body.
The irony of the last line… True, so true of mum’s of that mindset.

Ha! Mums have their priorities and I like the humorous twist to your response. However, skidmarks might be a result if you died frightened! 😉

Oh Doug the master of turning to tongue in cheek this lightened the mood and woke a few memories of my own. What will the neighbour say my Mother cried as an ambulance rushed to our house, she actually asked paramedics to take their shoes off at the door. What an era that was.

Thanks, Ellen. I have a sneaking suspicion that the so-called ‘Jewish mother’ of that era was in fact most mothers, God bless them. Perhaps the modern equivalent is the helicopter parent?

Yours may have been a helicopter parent where mine was different … concerned what the neighbours would think, what would Mum look like if I had forgotten to change my underwear and had an accident. 🤔🙄😳 where helicopter parents over protect, hover over, making sure they have had every chance.

Not sure I’m grasping the difference 🙂 Bottom line is they loved and cared for us.

I think one set worry for them where the other worry for what others think. Both love in their own ways x

Some things maternal are eternal, it would seem 🙂

Apparently, some of those things include a practical sarcasm. 🙂
